What is the thyroid?

The thyroid is a vital endocrine gland, primarily responsible for metabolic processes and hormone storage. A key feature of thyroid function is the production of the thyroid hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (tetraiodothyronine). These two hormones regulate cellular oxygen consumption and control the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. They are also involved in energy metabolism, as well as in the function of the heart, circulation, digestion, and growth. Some people also suffer from what is known as hypothyroidism (e.g., eating little and gaining weight too quickly) or hyperthyroidism (e.g., eating a lot and not gaining weight).

Thyroid hormones have the following overall effects because they promote:

  • the absorption of glucose
  • carbohydrate metabolism
  • oxygen consumption
  • the heat production
  • cholesterol reduction
  • the development of the central nervous system, genital organs and bone skeleton
  • muscle function
  • the heartbeat and blood pressure

How can you support the thyroid function?

The thyroid, like any other organ, is impaired by a certain vitamin and mineral deficiency. Iodine is an important mineral for optimal thyroid hormone secretion. If the body lacks iodine, sufficient thyroid hormones cannot be produced. The resulting symptoms include fatigue, lack of energy, unexpected weight gain, and difficulty learning and concentrating. Iodine is found in food primarily in saltwater fish, but dietary supplements can also be used to meet your needs.

Another important micronutrient for the thyroid is selenium. The thyroid produces an inactive form of the thyroid hormone: T4. This T4 hormone must first be converted into T3 before it can be effective in the body. However, selenium is necessary for this conversion! In principle, one could say that iodine stimulates and controls thyroid hormone production (primarily T4), while selenium regulates the conversion of T4 into effective T3.

At Muscle Lab, we also have unique, high-quality products for optimal thyroid function.
